Chapter 18

I stared at the naked guy on the grass, and my breath caught in my throat. “Grant?” I whispered.

Julie sucked in a long breath. “What the...?”

I met Jesse’s shocked eyes.

“Oh my gosh! It’s my...it’s Grant, my supposed human boyfriend. I-I didn’t think he’d understand that I was born a witch,” Julie said. “I vowed to keep all this from him, but he obviously knew about it.”

Grant’s eyes opened. “Julie...” he said.

“We’ve gotta get out of here,” Jesse said. “He’ll be fine, but I smell more werewolves on the prowl.”

“We can’t just leave him,” Julie said.

When Grant scrambled to his feet, I took off my sweater and wrapped it around his waist. “Maybe he can give us some answers,” I said to Jesse.

“I don’t trust him,” Jesse said.

Grant stumbled, still injured from the powerful blow, and Julie helped him catch his balance. “He’s coming with us,” Julie said. “He just needs a little time.”

“No way. He’ll just slow us down,” Jesse said. “We need to move.”

“Jesse,” I said, “please let Grant come with us.”

His jaw dropped. “Taylor! Why? Don’t you understand that—”

“For me?” I said. “Please?”

He shook his head, then met my gaze.

“Please?” I repeated.

“Okay,” he said. “Whatever you say.”

Julie and I helped Grant to the car. When Jesse threatened to throw him in the trunk, Julie rolled her eyes. Instead, Jesse and I sat in the front, and Grant and Julie sat in the back. The tires squealed, and we sped off like a bat out of hell. When Jesse felt we were in a safe place, he pulled the car over in an empty parking lot.

“What are you doing?” Julie asked.

“Getting some answers,” Jesse said.

“You could keep driving,” Grant said weakly. “I’m not going to attack you.”

“I’ve never trusted werewolves, and you’re no exception,” Jesse said, then slammed the door. “Now get out, and let’s talk.”

Grant didn’t seem threatening, and I wasn’t afraid of him. However, I also wasn’t naïve enough to think he couldn’t change in a heartbeat. He looked docile at the moment, but I knew how deadly werewolves could be, and I understood why Jesse was so wary of him. It still floored me that Julie’s boyfriend had turned out to be a supernatural creature, and I knew it floored her too.

Julie shoved Grant hard as anger flooded through her. “What the heck, Grant!? You lied to me.”

He frowned. “I know. I’m sorry, but I had to—”

“How could you hide this from me?” she shouted, cutting them off. “It isn’t like this is just some little secret. You’re an animal, for goodness sake. Don’t you think I deserved to know that?”

He sucked in a deep breath, then let it out slowly. “I know you’re really upset, Julie, but you also didn’t tell me—”

Julie slapped him across the cheek. “No! There is no excuse!” she yelled.

“I guess I deserve that,” he said.

“I can’t believe this,” she said. “So tell me, was it all a lie? Do you really care about me at all, or are you just a spy, sent to keep a close eye on Taylor and me?”

When he didn’t answer, I cut in.
